We all started the week with yards of white natural fibre fabrics and transformed them into a kaleidoscope of patterns. We mainly used indigo for blues but also sappanwood (red) and marigold with fustic (yellow) and modifiers. Resists through compression is the key to the patterns in shibori, and planning and pattern placement means that you can end up with planned designs rather than relying on luck. We learned a new vocabulary for the techniques too - stitching (hira-nui, mokume shibori, nui suji mokume, maki-nui), stitching on a fold (ori-nui, hinode, miru, awase-nui), binding (ne-maki, bai, boshi), clamping (itajime) and wrapping (bo maki, arashi). I am looking forward to making more pieces.
