Abstract The general objective of the present paper is to study the relationship between climate variables and population seasonal water consumption in Nouna, Burkina Faso. Monthly data of temperature, precipitation and meter reading of 35 standpipes were used over a five-year period of time. The approach was descriptive and analytic using linear and multiple correlations. Results show strong forcing effects of climate variables on the seasonal pattern of water consumption from standpipes in Nouna. Thus, there is a strong and positive correlation between temperature and water consumption (R2?=?0.5182, p-value?=?0.0083). This climate variable explains the high water consumption during the hot dry season of the year. Up to 42.26 of the annual water consumption occurs during the three hottest months. Conversely, there is a weak and negative correlation between precipitation and water consumption from standpipes in Nouna (R2?=?0.07618, p-value?=?0.3852). This climate variable explains the lower water consumption during the rainy season. Only 12.71 of the annual water consumption occurs during the three rainiest months of the year. The combined effect of both temperature and precipitation remains positive on water demand in Nouna (R2?=?0.7008, p-value?=?0.004382). The influence of these two climate variables gave a particular shape to the monthly water consumption curve. Overall, the peak appears in May (with 7.95 of the year water demand) and the trough in September (1.70) each year. Therefore, temperature raising and drought induced by climate change will increase water demand and consumption in Nouna.
