I first met Roy in the late 1980s when he was Works Director at the Wellington Tannery in Raunds, Northamptonshire, and I was working at BLC and carrying out a process survey, but it was not until a few years later when he gave a talk at Nene College, the pre-cursor to the University of Northampton at Park Campus, that I got to know him better. He gave a talk, dressed as a Victorian Gentleman, about the history of bookbinding leather I think, using a Magic Lantern and lantern slides to illustrate the talk. I was the 'lackey' who had to change the slides, all too slowly for Roy's liking at times I seem to remember!
