1.Fertilizers remain integral part of crop productivity, food security and farmers'income.Fertilizer and agriculture sectors remained resilient even during COVID-19 pandemic providing support to overall economy.2.Existing policies for fertilizer sector do not encourage balanced and integrated use of mineral and organic fertilizers.Use ratio of primary nutrients N,P and K has got distorted from 4.7:2.0:1 in 2010-11 to 7.1:2.8:1 in 2019-20.There has been inadequate use of organic fertilizers.Indian soils are experiencing widespread deficiency of secondary and micronutrients. All this is leading to lower nutrient use efficiency, lower than optimum crop yields and lower farmers'income, besides creating environmental issues.
