Alaska lands a lucrative salmon season

Big numbers: This was a great year for the salmon industry, in both volume and dollar terms.The Alaska Department of Fish and Game on Nov. 1 posted preliminary totals for the season: 233.8 million fish harvested, generating an ex-vessel value of $643.9 million.That was the third-highest on record for total fish harvested. And when adjusted for inflation, the ex-vessel value was the third-highest since 1975, the department said.Sockeye is the state's top money salmon, and accounted for $361.4 million or 56 percent of overall salmon value. Pink salmon was next at nearly $179 million.
