Opportunities for biogas and biomethane businesses are expanding in Brazil. However, according to industry executives, difficulties, especially in the distribution of fuel throughout the country, are still an obstacle to launching investments. The sugar and ethanol industry sees biomethane production as an attractive alternative to monetize waste streams. Biogas production is claimed to be even more profitable than the most common option of allocating biomass for cogeneration of electric energy, pointed out Raizen's CEO, Ricardo Mussa. The problem, according to Mussa, is the difficulty in connecting to the gas pipeline network, which ends up preventing the transport of renewable fuel to more markets throughout Brazil.
