Liberating colors - Hella Jongerius's philosophy of color

Every time Hella Jongerius has an interview in recent years, she is asked what her favorite color is at the end. She says that's the most inane question. Her latest book / Don't Have a Favourite Colour addresses this common question and probes the core of this immense theme, "color." Jongerius was appointed as art director for "colors and materials" at the Swiss furniture company Vitra in 2007. Ever since, she has been involved in systematizing colors used for Vitra's products and developing new colors for each material. The book summarizes the current results of her approximately 10 years of research there. While learning from masterpieces including paintings by Vermeer and architecture by Rietveld, and analyzing the use of color by renowned designers from Eames to Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, Jongerius always approaches her work with her own hands. What she has arrived at after handling numerous samples and conducting various experiments at her studio was a practical and dynamic color system. Its content was unveiled as an exhibition titled Colour Machine at Milan Design Week in April, and the bold colorful installation attracted great attention.
