A 1.31 3-stage i-VTEC VCM engine, which meets both low fuel consumption and low emission requirements, was developed for the 2006 Civic Hybrid. During the process of developing this engine, friction was reduced and volumetric efficiency was increased. VTEC technology was evolved to realise a 3-stage i-VTEC VCM that allows for 3-stage valve motion switchover at low and high engine speeds and during cylinder idling. With the increased motor output, it is possible to run the car on the motor alone over a wider range of driving conditions and to further reduce fuel consumption. The engine that has been developed, the more powerful motor and the more efficient Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) give the 2006 Civic Hybrid better dynamic performance and a fuel consumption of 31 km/1 in the 10 - 15 mode. In addition, the performance of the high density 2-bed, 3-way catalyst has been improved, resulting in low emissions equivalent to 75% of the low emission standard for the 2005 financial year.
