In aviation and other high risk operations, the face is less well protected than other important regions of the body. Blunt injury to the face and eyes is an increasing problem in the military due to current combat operations, as well as the growing use of helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) by mounted and dismounted soldiers. Previous research has documented the risk of severe injury in vehicular crashes and minor injury to dismounted soldiers from tripping or falling when wearing HMDs (1). Emerging injury data and improvements in materials science are driving the development of better facial armor that is highly protective and compatible with the work environment.
