That was one thing Gary Bartlett learned as he was hanging from his seatbelt in his USD3 million Jaguar XKSS, inverted among the shrubbery at the bottom of a steep Italian ravine. The 165-mph Jaguar's rear brakes had locked up approaching an intersection. Bartlett was two-thirds of the way through last year's Mille Miglia, an annual reenactment of the 1000-mile race around Italy last held in 1957. Now, average speed is controlled to about a third of that in 1955, when Stirling Moss averaged nearly 100 mph in his Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR. Nevertheless, there are ample opportunities for entrants to enjoy some performance motoring.
