In 1998 when I began to plan my first retrofit to my 1970s Beaver vertical mill, I made sure to preserve the cranks on the X and Y axes. I'd never owned or run a CNC machine, and for various reasons it was impossible for me to believe that I could ever do all my work without some hands-on manual control. When that project reached fruition - just in time for a customer's rectangular O-ring groove with radiused corners - I quickly learned otherwise. I took the handles off and haven't put them on since.
