JUST HOW IMPORTANT ARE the full-sized sport-utility vehicles to General Motors? Consider this: GM controls 75 percent of the market. Sure, the market isn't what it used to be. Still, 300,000 or so move out of dealer showrooms each year into unusually well-heeled customers' slightly oversized garages. So it's a critical segment for GM for two reasons: The big SUVs' profit margins have seldom been better, and the brand and model loyalty is among the industry's strongest.
