The McLaren P1 will change the way you think about supercars. IT STANDS THERE, IN THE Bahrain International Circuit's pit lane, its strange black paint job changing to purple in the bright Middle Eastern sun. You enter the cockpit by a small and light carbon-fiber dihedral door that opens like a scissor blade. You settle, low, into the carbon-frame race seat, carbon dashboard in front, carbon doors to either side, carbon sill below your left elbow. And just a few minutes later, as you power around that racetrack, your prejudices and parameters of what you think constitutes a high-performance car are entirely blown to smithereens.
