A TRADITIONAL OVERLAND vehicle is simple and capable, and can carry a lot of gear. You need enough fuel, water, food and recovery equipment to cross a remote landscape without assistance - in a vehicle that can be fixed with whatever tools you've brought along. The vehicles we usually picture are Defender 110s, Land Cruiser Troopies, Unimogs and the like. The reality is that hardly anyone makes a vehicle like that anymore, especially for the North American market. So here, we are taking a modern platform and seeing how hard it is to transform it into the "Ultimate Overlander." Our base vehicle is a 2012 Land Rover LR4, a model that already has cavernous cargo capacity, impeccable manners on or off the highway, and has been building a deserved reputation for reliability.
