THOSE RACE FANS WITH A good memory - and probably a membership in the AARP - may recall the Bahamas Speed Week, an event held from. 1954 to 1966 that capitalized on one central appeal: Where else are you going to race in December? The event, held in Nassau, had a tough start, run in 1954 on old airport runways that were as abrasive as sandpaper. Still, a few notables showed up, and Masten Gregory, in a Ferrari, took the Nassau Trophy. By 1957, the event relocated to a more suitable area where a five-mile track was laid out, and it included pits, a press box and a big scoreboard. The event had its ups and downs over the next decade or so, but still, some impressive drivers showed up. Among those to win the Nassau Trophy: Stirling Moss, Dan Gurney, Innes Ireland, Roger Penske, James "Hap" Sharp and A.J. Foyt.
