THE LAST VOLKS-wagen with the R moniker in the United' States was the Golf R32 in 2008. It was fitted with VW's VR6 engine, which also saw duty in the Audi TT. The only problems were its thirst for fuel and its weight. The new Golf R doesn't suffer the same ills. It gets VW's 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection engine that makes more power (256 hp) and drinks less fuel (19 mpg city, 27 mpg highway), and the three door weighs about 200 pounds less than the old one.
