In recent years, it has become clear that fresh water turtles excavated from the medieval ruins in Fukuyama City, Hiroshima Prefecture contain Mauremys reevesii. In this study, I confirmed the description about Kusokame in "Fukuyamashiryo (福山志料)”, a regional geography of Bingofukuyama Domain compiled in the early 19th century. Probably, Kusokame was the local name of the current Japanese standard name Kusagame. This suggests that Mauremys reevesii continued to settle in this area from the medieval to the late Edo period.
