According to the Semiconductor Industry Association in a December 2022 press release, anticipation and passage of the CHIPS and Science Act in August 2022 had, at the time of the release, led to the announcement of over 50 new semiconductor ecosystem projects across the US, including the construction of new semiconductor manufacturing facilities (fabs), expansions of existing sites, and facilities that supply the materials and equipment used in chip manufacturing. This represents over $210 billion in private investments announced across 20 states to increase domestic manufacturing capacity. In anticipation of CHIPS Act incentives, some projects had already begun groundbreaking and construction activities, expecting production to start as early as the end of 2024. Other projects will begin construction in 2023. There have been additional announcements so far this year.
