I very much enjoyed the discussion of tides by Alan Champneys in his Westward Ho! series 1. As he explains, the theory of tides is not straightforward. Indeed, it is documented that Aristotle spent the final part of his life on the island of Euboea, where he studied the tidal flows and the Euripus phenomenon at Chalkida. It has been suggested that his failure to explain the tidal variations drove him to hurl himself into the strait where he drowned 2.
