THE WARDDEKEN INDIGENOUS Protected Area, bordering Kakadu National Park, covers an area just one-fifth the size of Tasmania and is rich in ancient art sites, rare plant and animal species, and pristine habitats. For thousands of years, small family groups of Bininj walked this region. Then miners, pastoralists, buffalo shooters, missionaries and coastal traders lured them to places such as Pine Creek and Oenpelli, where they were given shelter and employment, and paid in tobacco, tea, sugar and grog. Once they became involved with this new lifestyle, much of the stone country was deserted.
