STOP IN THE NAME OF CHARLES DARWIN

WE'RE SITTING AROUND the kitchen table at the main homestead of what used to he White Wells station but is now called Charles Darwin Reserve (CDR). The property's manager, Leigh Whisson, has spread out a map of the 68,600 ha property. It's September 2003. Leigh, a bear-like man in his 30s, with laughing eyes and a thatch of unruly hair, is pointing out where we might find malleefowl. As it happens we don't find any during my visit but Jiri and Marie Lochman, the famed WA nature photographers who aremy companions on this assignment, will photograph the vulnerable bird on their next trip to CDR, 375 km north-east of Perth.
