The Pomonal Native Flower Show

The arrival of Glynn and. Peg Sago to Pomonal from the Maroondah APS group in Melbourne was probably the catalyst for the creation of this iconic native flower show held in the Grampians in western Victoria on the first weekend in October. Together with Jane and Phil Williams of the Pomonal Wildflower Nursery, they regularly travelled to Horsham for the Wimmera Native Plant Group meetings until they formed their own SGAP group in Pomonal in 1981, with Glynn as president and Jane as secretary. The first show was held in the Pomonal Hall in September 1983. With direction from Jane Marriott, the show was a simple display with flowers in jam jars, some plant and book sales, a fern display and a superb display of Fungi watercolours by Stan Kelly, all fitting within the walls of the hall. The wonderful Alby Lindner from Quantong, west of Horsham, provided masses of beautiful banksias, dryandra and rare mallee eucalvpts from his famous 'Banksia Hill'.
