Coking of the α2 Fraction of Coal Pitch and the Structure of Its Coke Residue

Abstract The α2 fraction of moderate-temperature coal pitch, which is insoluble in toluene but soluble in quinoline, is obtained by selective solution. The composition, structure, and morphology of its powder particles are studied by scanning electron microscopy, NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, thermal analysis, and chromatography with mass spectrometry. The morphology and structure of the coke residue from the α2 fraction are investigated as a function of the temperature. The results are of interest in assessing whether the α2 fraction of coal pitch could be of value in the production of functional carbon materials
