An increase in wind production capped capture prices across theSouthWest Power Pool and the Midcontinent Independent SystemOperator despite higher temperatures and demand on July 31.SPP saw the greatest temperature rise, with CustomWeatherdata showing the average daily temperature up 6 degrees Fahrenheitat 80 F. Peakload demand responded by jumping up 4.98 GW, andoverall generation ramped up 45.06 GW. Nevertheless, on-peak windcurtailments were 0.8 GW higher compared to the day before as windyconditions allowed for greater generation. According to the RegionalTransmission Organization, wind generation was up by almost 55%. Windpenetration was at 18.04% on July 31 during on-peak hours, according toS&P Global Commodity Insights data. In spite of the bullish weather anddemand fundamentals, the higher wind supply and penetration easedwind capture prices by $6.47 in the SPP North Hub and $4.63 in theSouth Hub, settling at $56.31/MWh and $75.44/MWh, respectively.
