International code considering planted forests' costs and benefits is open for comment

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation's Forestry Department has drafted a Planted Forests Code, the genesis of which they attribute to discussions at meetings in New Zealand and Australia in 2003 and 2004. The principal motivations for developingan agreed international code relevant to planted forests are the increasing importance of planted forests, and the recognition that there are potential costs as well as benefits associated with planted forests. The Code is intended as a voluntary instrument which 'raises the floor' of performance across the planted forests sector.
