摘要

The present work evaluates the effectiveness of applying ball burnishing process in treating scratch damage. Ball burnishing is performed on flat Al-6061 surfaces that have been pre-scratched under 10 N load and 20 N load. Burnishing depth is varied from 20-to-100 μm. An improvement in the average surface roughness, R_a, maximum peak height, R_p, maximum valley depth, R_v, and scratch groove width, W, is achieved within all parameters studied. There is a clear trend showing a gain in improvement as higher burnishing depths are applied. This could be attributed to greater plastic deformation occurring at higher pressure. Microscopic evaluation reveals that there is no discernible scratch groove after burnishing is applied to the scratched surface at burnishing depth of 100 μm.
