LUCI, Lighting Urban Community International, recently ran a two-day conference to both celebrate its twentieth anniversary and attempt to unpick the future of urban and public realm lighting. Back in June 2020 we were still four months into the first Covid lockdown and blithely unaware that this would be but the start of two years of restrictions. Nevertheless, even then, many lighting professionals were beginning to think about life beyond the pandemic, albeit super cautiously. Not least of this was how the experience of lockdown might kickstart a radical re-evaluation of our public realm at night.
