Established between 1992 and 1994, the Water Corporation's Albany Effluent Irrigated Treefarm is the outcome of extensive public consultation into sustainable land-based disposal of treated sewerage effluent. Ten years on, irrigated plantation forestry has proven highly successful and will continue to be the backbone of sustainable environmental management of treated sewerage effluent at Albany. The treefarm serves the City of Albany on the south coast of Western Australia, 410km south of Perth. TheAlbany sewerage system has a connected population of 25,000 people and comprises gravity and pressure sewer reticulation. All of the city's sewerage is treated at the Timewell Road wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) before being pumped 12km to the treefarm site. The area experiences annual average rainfall and evaporation of 809mm and 1373mm respectively.
