In my last editorial, I mentioned dusting off my little X/Y CNC table. While it's a bit of a compromise, it works well for the kinds of things I play with in my shop. With the handwheel for the mill's quill swapped out for a stepper motor, the package gains 3D capability and can handle just about anything I toss at it, as long as high accuracy isn't a requirement.
