USDA releases draft of mandatory plan

USA AGRICULTURE Secretary, Mike Johanns, recently released the first official blueprint for a mandatory program of animal identification in the US. That came when he unveiled a draft, strategic plan his agency has developed as "a thinking paper". TheUS Department of Agriculture's plan outlines a proposed timetable that could implement the proposed National Animal Identification System (NAIS) as a mandatory program by early 2009 - in just fewer than four years. The document is not final or even offered as a proposed rulemaking. Public comments are sought through June 6.
