Whole farm planning, or its equivalent, has formed the basis of sustainable farming training systems for many years. Among the many mapping layers included in such a plan are soil types and landscape units, each with its own production potential andmanagement requirements. Such management units help define the ultimate layout and infrastructure requirements for a property. They permit the landholder to make rational management decisions in the short and long term. An example of the type of challenge facing landholders was reported by Belinda Hackett (AFJ, March 2002) for acid soils in the Cootamundra and Adelong areas.
