Varied freshwater types abound

Although freshwater fish account for only a small percentage of Australia's overall aquaculture production, a wide variety of hardy freshwater species suited for a range of climates and environments can be found throughout Australia. The freshwater crayfish industry is dominated by three species: yabby, red claw and marron. Yabbies - native to Victoria, NSW, South Australia and Queensland - are the most widely distributed species of crayfish in Australia. They are being farmed in Western Australia.They can withstand a wide range of conditions and climates. Although they will not grow in water temperatures colder than 15 deg C, yabbies can withstand much colder temperatures without perishing. They occur naturally in streams and lakes in southern NSW's snowy alpine regions.
