THE SCOTTISH Chiefs Inn - the oldest brewery in Australia still operating on its original site - draws many tourists eager to take a trip through its history, see the display of memorabilia and taste the speciality beers being brewed before their eyes. And yet, it once had an unsavoury reputation as being "not fit for the meanest bushman". It was delicensed when the adjacent Volum Brewing Company bought it in 1864 for ￡2972. Volum was the established business, Geelong Brewery, set up in 1845 by John Cumming and bought by James Volum in 1857.
