TREES can reduce the rate at which water tables rise, thereby helping to control dryland salinity. This simple statement is correct, but it belies the complexity of interactions between trees and the water table. Which trees are best? How many are needed? Where on the farm and in the landscape should they be planted? Over what length of time are they needed? How do differences between catchments influence the effect of trees?
