COMPUTER hardware is ever-increasing in speed and capability, and operating systems have advanced from disk operating systems (DOS, eight-bit) to operating environments such as Windows 95 (32-bit). Together, they have significantly changed the capabilities of computer languages and application packages. Packages using DOS can either undergo a complete (and very expensive) rewrite in the newer languages or fade into the past. Several programs once considered very good have already bitten the dust because of the expense in keeping up with new programming technology.
