The US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management kicked off the first West Coast offshore wind lease auction Dec. 6 with five lease areas totaling 373,268 acres that have the potential to produce more than 4.5 GW of offshore wind energy. The auction opened with bids ranged from $6,333,800 to $8,041,800, accord to BOEM data. “The Business Network for Offshore Wind is excited to see the commencement of the first West Coast and first floating offshore wind lease auction begin today, which is expected to go two days,” Melinda Skea, the group’s vice president of public affairs, said in an email. “This is truly a milestone for the nation and the industry, and will immediately put the US at the forefront of a rapidly advancing new industry with the opportunity to emerge as a true global leader.”
