AUSTRALIA'S LUXURY CAR LEADER: Ford's stylish Fairlane Ghia

THE MOST successful Australian-built luxury car over recent years has been the Ford Fairlane. Since identifying a niche and producing a uniquely styled car for the purpose, Ford has "owned" that segment of the market since the arrival of the Z A in May 1967. Holden followed with its Brougham that sported the most elongated rear overhang ever seen on a local product (almost like Pinnochio in reverse!) and Chrysler also joined the fray with their Valiant VIP. The Brougham and VIP were mildly successful, but trailed the Fairlane badly in the sales stakes because their down market roots were all too obvious.
