BURDEKIN SALES ON HOLD: Sugar surge pushes four mills to limit

THE RELEASE of new cane-growing land in Queensland's Burdekin River Irrigation Area south-east of Townsville has been put on hold until a way can be found for the district's milling industry to handle the increased production. So dramatic has been the rate of development of irrigation land for sugar production in the Lower Burdekin since the Burdekin Falls Dam was built in 1987 that the region's four CSR-owned mills are now stretched to the limit.
