SOUTHCORP Wines is Australia's largest producer of table, fortified and sparkling wines and is among the top-ten wine companies in the world. It has 30% of the domestic Australian wine market, through its 14 company brands. This relatively unknown name behind the bottleshop brands has led the Australian wine industry's growth in the past five years. Through an ongoing series of winery takeovers in the late 1980s, followed by a careful rationalisation of labels and a massive export investment, Southcorp has been able to seize strong market share at every price point in the competitive wine-retail ladder both in Australia and overseas. It has also bought some of the best vineyard land across Australia including a majority of the premium Coonawarra and recently a share in the Yarra Valley, making it the world's largest individual vineyard owner, with 6000 hectares of vines spread across three states.
