Lima beans show promise as summer crop

LIMA BEANS are showing promise as a high returning alternative to navy beans in the summer-cropping zones of northern Australia. Queensland Department of Primary Industries principal plant breeder at Warwick, Robert Redden, says initial trials have shown lima beans may have the potential to generate higher gross-margin returns than navy beans and may be more reliable under rain-fed conditions. The crop is not yet grown commercially in Australia, but Redden believes it may prove a viable option in farming zones such as the Burnett region of southern Queensland.
