A significant agreement was signed in Egypt today that paves the way for Israel to export gas to Europe for the first time via liquefied natural gas plants in the North African nation. As the European Union looks to replace Russian energy imports, Brussels views the East Mediterranean as a very important future supplier of gas and green hydrogen to the continent, and while the current focus is on gas-rich Egypt and Israel, Cyprus is also starting to build up a decent gas resource. This Israeli export initiative is part of a memorandum of understanding signed in Cairo by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Egypt's Petroleum Minister Tarek El Molla and Israel's Energy Minister Karine Elharrar that calls for greater cooperation on natural gas issues.
