Speaking at the Petcore Europe Annual Conference, Casper van den Dungen, Vice President of Plastics Ilecyclers Europe, stated that 250K mt in new recycling capacity, which will be the equivalent around 20 new plants, will be needed to process polyethylene terephthalate (PET) waste in order to meet the target of 77% collection rate for PET beverage botdes by 2025. Also, by 2025, the EU will require that plastic bottles have 25% recycled PET (rPET) content. Because a new recycling plant typically requires a 12-month lead time for construction, van den Dungen stated that the industry needs to make investments soon in order to have plant operational by 2025.
