Despite its current financial plight, GM may have an ace up its sleeve in the form of the Volt, a stylish extended-range electric vehicle officially scheduled to launch in 2010. "It's a great opportunity," says Andrew Farah, chief engineer on the project. "I've always been involved in firsts, and to be involved in another one that I think has great commercial possibility as well as being a great way to change a piece of our transportation viewpoint and what vehicles can and can't do is just wonderful." Farah is convinced by the decision to take the E-REV route. "In 15 years' time, there might be power outlets all over for electric cars, so battery-only electric vehicles might be more prevalent then. But between now and then you have to offer the customer something that doesn't cause problems if they can't find somewhere to plug in.
