Niche blackwood milling business will grow as timber's carbon value recognised

The outlook for private forestry in Australia is much more promising than it was four years ago according to a Victorian timber producer. Denis Brown, who runs Corsair Timbers, a small company which specialises in cut-to-order Australian native timbers for the furniture market, is optimistic about the future of his industry despite a drop in demand over the past year because of the downturn in the economy. He believes, with concerns about climate change now much more to the fore, once Governments get serious about trying to do something about climate change, such as banning imported timbers that have been unsustainably harvested from rainforests (i.e. mer-bau and meranti), sustainably-harvested Australian timbers will take their place.
