摘要

One of the biggest challenges in the development of voluntary environmental management systems (EMS) in Australian agriculture has always been its cost relative to potential rewards. Some farmers have been sufficiently motivated to implement EMS basedon a desire to improve natural resource management. However, for most the issue is one of cold, hard business logic: the returns do not appear to justify the costs, so EMS have not been widely adopted. The imminent development of a national greenhouse emission trading scheme in Australia might change this. Actions on farms that reduce greenhouse emissions or actively sequester carbon dioxide may, in the future, generate revenue for a farm business.
