Summer crops off to late start

Australia's summer crops from the previous two years were very prof-itable for northern growers. In 2008, Australian summer crop production was assessed at 4.6 million tonnes. Summer crops for 2009 were 3.8 million tonnes but still enabled an export sorghum program out of Queensland. Prices for both crops were elevated by low world grain stocks, and the Australian summer growing conditions were good (at least, early), resulting in high yields. But things have changed. Feed grain prices are off 100 dollar a tonne on prices of one year ago. And the summer qrowinq season was slow to start.
