New niche canoia opportunities opening up

Canoia production in Victoria in 2009 was the highest in six years at 390,000 tonnes - a 55% increase on the previous season. About 60% of Victoria's canoia is now produced in the Western District. For 2010 growers are reminded of the importance of timely sowing of canoia, which is more affected by delayed sowing than cereals. Subsoil moisture is also important in the medium- and low-rainfall areas, with some advisors advocating a minimum of 25-50 millimetres of plant-available water before sowing.
