NEW OPPORTUNITIES for hardwood plantation thinnings — a resource managed primarily for pulping — are showing lucrative potential, according to a recent Queensland investigation. Thinnings are young trees removed from plantations to improve the overall quality and survival rates of remaining trees. Removing lesser-quality trees and trees that hinder the growth of others is an expensive but necessary part of plantation management.
