WHEN it comes to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), anxiety has become the norm. The disease has resurfaced again in North America to test our ingenuity and mock our resolve. The epicentre of the investigative activity this time is in the UnitedStates. There are indications that the US's positive cow originated from Alberta, Canada, where another case of BSE was confirmed in the spring of last year. Point, counterpoint is obviously taking place as both the US and Canada attempt to work out thefinality of it. Nonetheless, with utmost objectivity, the entire subject of BSE needs to be looked at from a holistic context. Whether or not the cow originated from Canada is relatively insignificant except from the trade-related implications, including possible further restrictions.
