A: Let's look at the absolute basics of a steam generator. A steam generator consists of some sort of a holding tank, a connection to a water source, and an outlet for steam. The water is heated with an electrical element, usually located in the bottom of the holding tank. The size of this electrical element is a factor in determining how much steam the unit will produce. The holding tank must be airtight and rated for pressure, usually the sterilizer steam chamber. It must be pressure rated to allow the steam to build pressure. Any vessel which builds pressure must have a pressure release valve for safety reasons.
